For those familiar with long thru-hikes, the idea of a relaxing zero day is a good one. A zero day is when you log zero trail miles. You take a much-needed rest. It’s sometimes spent to catch up on life items, like phone calls, emails, or even laundry. Sometimes, zero days are spent to stay a little longer in an area to get to know it. And that’s what Camino hikers will find taking a zero day at Rio Vista Lodge on the Pacuare River: Paddling one of the best rivers in the world with two relaxing nights at our lodge.
What’s the Camino de Costa Rica? The Camino de Costa Rica is a new, long thru-hike that reaches from the Caribbean to the Pacific. The trail takes you through sugarcane fields, into the cloud forest, across indigenous territory, and it even crosses the Pacuare River. At the Pacuare river and Camino trail intersection, our lodge is just a couple kilometers away.

Logistics
With our location so close to the trail, setting up an off-trail excursion and taking a zero day at our lodge is easy. Our guides will meet you at the Pacuare cable crossing, and we’ll paddle the short distance to our lodge. After spending the night, we’ll then tackle the famous rapids of the Pacuare, and we’ll float through the Pacuare Gorge and Dos Montanas, two of the most iconic canyons on the river. At takeout, we’ll then shuttle you back to our lodge to spend another night. The next morning, it’s back to the trail as you hike up and out of the canyon towards Tres Equis.
